WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE: One year ago in normal space-time, the Universe endured the worst tragedy it ever forgot… in the supernova explosion of Odin's Eye the Doctor died.
Upon returning to this Universe, the Doctor has found everything far from how he left it. Worlds are being oppressed and it is all the blame of his people. The so-called Central Authority controls all interstellar and intratemporal traffic. Having lost his friend Drax to the Timelord Intevention Squad (nicknamed the Squids), the Doctor is in search of him now.
In the last episodes, the Doctor, Fred and Irish snuck aboard the traveling cruise liner the Flying Montecarlo on a mission to find the missing Drax. Instead they find many of the Doctor;s old friends working as crew under assumed identities and with complete amnesia of their real lives. When the objected, he was taken to the Sickbay for treatment. Meanwhile Fred joined forces with undercover Hegemonic agent Bond and Irish found his sister Harlequin hiding in the ventilation system desperate to recover her old human friend Flavia (now Captain Lavia). While blending in at dinner, the 4 companions reunited to share their tales and form a plan. But to their surprise, the Doctor stole the show walking in the dining room as a guest of Dr. Chrono-Von-Meter (Professor Chronotis) and believing himself to be Dr. Von Schmidt.
SETTING: The Flying Montecarlo, a luxury spaceliner on a millenia journey across the galaxy. Passengers are renowned scientists, politicians, inventors, scholars and people who could change history. The crew consists of many old friends of the Doctor's, brainwashed and with new identities.
The Doctor - [Tuna] - the wandering infamous timelord in his 10th regeneration has returned home to a time of temporal, universal strife. Now calls himself Dr. Von Schmidt, a classmate of Dr. Chrono-Von-Meter.
Irish - [Rob] - he Doctor's feline companion, with green fur, mental powers, a dislike for water and all things that muss his fur. He hasn't seen his feline family in years, but shares a unique mental bond with them.
"Fred"
(Eos) - [David] - a member of the race of energy beings known as "The
People". After establishing a rapport with Irish, she risked her life
to save him and the Doctor. She has taken the human name of Winnifred
Stephanie O'Connell ("Fred" for short) for herself.
Pierce Bond - a secret and private investigator resembling that fictional 007 earth spy. He wears tuxedos, has dark, neatly-trimmed hair and drinks lemon twists, shaken not stirred. He's aboard the Flying Montecarlo not for pleasure but for very secretive work. His cover story is that of a trillionaire-playboy on a long, much-needed holiday.
Cruise Director Roxana aka Romana - blonde, perky and timelady Romana's alternate personality. Like her crewmates, she remembers nothing of her former life and is very happy to be aboard the Flying Montecarlo.
Security Chief Blitz aka Sabalom Glitz - once a thief-for-hire, this ex-pirate now has the assumed role of an ultra-conservative security chief. His sole existence is to stop crime. It is his calling, and something he is exceptionally proud of. Any implication otherwise makes him prone to violent outbursts.
Captain Lavia aka Flavia - the redheaded commander of the Flying Montecarlo, hers is a dream job. She steers the automatic piloted ship through hyperspeeds around the most exotic places of the Mutter Spiral on a millenia journey. When she first started (so long ago she can't remember), she was the most excited captain they ever had. But in the last few months she has become bored and discontented. She feels called to do something more for "her people". She keeps as a pet an orange poodle she coaxes to do cat tricks for some unknown reason, even to her.
Harley - aka Harlequin, Irish's feline sister who was last seen departing as a kitten to travel with former President of the High Council Flavia. She's a calico cat, fully grown and on a mission.
Dr. Chrono-Von-Meter - ship's doctor, better known to the Doctor as Professor Chronotis (Salyvin), a former timelord criminal and master of mental manipulation. Short, stout, around 70-ish, with white hair, glasses and a bumbling Cambridge professor persona.
Nurse Chapel - blonde, pretty, assistant to Dr. Chrono-Von-Meter with perhaps another more secretive master
Engineer Frax - better known to the Doctor as timelord Drax, but now acting
as the cruise ship's chief engineer and fix-it-man.
Passengers
Fred and company follow the crowd of passengers and crew to the Skyline Deck where a midnight party is raging under the stars. Tables are laden with hors d'oeurves and a steel drum band plays tropical tunes as the passengers dance under simulated twin moonlight. It's a festive atmosphere but Fred and Irish are anything but festive. Their attention remains riveted to their friend the Doctor who has been completely ignoring them since dinner, all through the evening stage show and now avoids them as he chatters on with his new crewmate friends. Bond warns they are exposing themselves too soon by stalking the man, but Fred insists they must get the Doctor alone. Irish worries they've done something to him; Irish has been unable to communicate with maker all night. Harley says it was the same with Flavia after the Chamber. Fred ends the bickering by commanding everyone to action. She instructs Harley and Irish to do a little reconnaissance down in the Sickbay and see if they can figure out what might have been done to the Doctor. She sends Bond to distract Captain Lavia a few minutes so she can get a private word in with the Doctor. Bond isn't pleased with the idea but agrees.
Meanwhile on the same deck, the Doctor (Von Schmidt) accompanies Captain Lavia across the dance floor in a few "forbidden dances" then escorts the bubbly lady to a seat at the bar for a refreshing drink. Lavia behaves like a schoolgirl pestering the Doctor to tell her more about his travels. Being an archeologist, the Doctor regales her with tales of ancient civilizations, lost worlds and the hunt for missing treasure. He recalls one adventure on a rustic planet on the edge of the Helical Galaxy. Space miners told tales of a cave made entirely of blue crystal with the most amazing abilities. Lavia gets misty and picks up the tale. Supposedly the blue crystal is formed with a near infinite number of perfect striations that have a calming effect on the mind. The Doctor conversationally asks Lavia if she had heard the same tale. Lavia is confused trying to remember and supposes she must have. The Doctor admits it is probably an old pirate's legend, but it was fun to explore. Lavia agrees admitting she thought the same when she was on Metebelis. The memory immediately stops Lavia and intrigues the Doctor. He asks when she visited Metebelis. Lavia struggles to remember and fails. She recalls wanting to go there before... Before when, the Doctor asks. Before she came to the Montecarlo. Lavia shakes off the memory saying that was an entire lifetime ago and unimportant. Now she's captain of this fine ship and her life's ambitions go no further than these walls. The Doctor drinks to that allowing the conversation to drift off naturally. he says only that Lavia must tell him about this other life sometime; it sounds adventurous and vastly intriguing.
Bond interrupts the Doctor to ask Lavia to dance. Bond and Lavia go out on the dance floor dancing to the Latin beat when a Congo Line breaks out. They and most of the passengers do a spin around the deck laughing and hooting at the thrill.
Meanwhile, Fred sits next to the Doctor and capitalizes on their moment of privacy. The Doctor mistakes her for just another passenger. Seeing the bartender eavesdropping Fred orders a cocktail and attempts to blend in. As soon as the bartender scurries off to another patron Fred renews her attempt to talk to the Doctor in hushed whispers. She asks him what he's up to and what he's learned. The Doctor plays along a little acknowledging his learned many things in his travels but now he's here to rest. Fred begins to fear the Doctor has forgotten all about her and their mission. She tries to remind him the same way he tried to remind Romana of her identity. Chief Blitz notices the conversation and sidles over to ask if Dr. Von Schmidt is well. At hearing that name, Fred becomes very agitated and pressures the Doctor to remember her. Then he catches a whiff of cat hair on her clothing and violently sneezes. That causes the Doctor to announce he does remember her... from dinner when she share a table with two flea-ridden felines.
Irish and Harley sneak down to the lower levels of the ship. They find Sickbay closed and locked for off hours. Harley shows Irish a back door in and the pair explore. The reception room is sterile and empty. A faint light attracts them to the patient room beyond. After gaining entry, Irish sees the Doctor still lying on a medibed strapped to what appears to be a scanner. The Doctor is faintly glowing a pale bluish hue and appears unconscious. Irish races to investigate, but Harley holds him back. She senses something dangerous about that room. Irish refuses to be deterred, but as soon as he leaves his sister's side Harley is tackled with a canvas knapsack. Irish turns and defends his sister against Nurse Chapel. He grows to tiger size, growling at her to let his sister go. Nurse Chapel calls them both filthy pests and maintains a near smothering stranglehold over Harley. When Irish attacks, Nurse Chapel whips out a pen light. With a flip of the switch, the pen light emits a high ear-piercing shrill on supersonic wavelengths. The sound assaults Irish and Harley's nervous system. Harley is somewhat protected by the muffling canvas, but Irish falls helpless to the noise. In moments he shrinks back to cat size and passes out.
Captain Lavia and Roxana come to investigate the Doctor's disturbing conversation with a young woman (Fred). When her handsome friend (Bond) offers to take her away, the Doctor insists to Chief Blitz that all is well. He just has a touch of allergies and the cat dander sets them off. Crisis averted Lavia pulls Blitz out on the dance floor (since he distracted her dance partner). The Doctor is left with Roxana. When he begins sneezing again, she takes pity on him and escorts the Doctor to the outer Sky Lounge where the air is crisper.
The pair step out into a Venetian-styled veranda surrounding with a million stars and a very real nebula. Again the Doctor engages Roxana in idle conversation about her opinion of the sight. He assumes she's tired of it having been on the Montecarlo so long. Deftly he asks how long she said she crewed here. Roxana remembers it only as a long time, perhaps years. The Doctor admits he is looking forward to staying on awhile - a nice leisurely journey through space and time is just what the Doctor ordered. Roxana startles at the phrase but doesn't stiffen. The Doctor absorbs himself in the interstellar scenery having glimpsed a familiar cluster of stars. It looks like Cassiopeia... the singing sisters. He once visited a planet in that sector on his digs. Roxana names the planet as Metebelis, home of the blue crystal cave. The Doctor asks how long since she visited the place. Roxana stumbles at the question. She can't remember actually being there, just wanting to go. Why, he asks. Because it is home to a perfect crystal with the ability to drive men mad or clarify the mind. Roxana answers the question without hesitation, but as soon as she says the words she becomes agitated, almost fearful. The Doctor notes that then laughs it off with a joke about the old pirate's tales ending with a curse of some sort. He much rather enjoys the clarity he's finding in this restful journey. Roxana suggests they return to the party then and they do.
Bond notices the agitated conversation at the bar and quickly extracts Fred once again. She walks away willingly although defeated. it seems the Doctor has been lost to this rampant case of amnesia too. Bond glances a furtive bald crewman observe the conversation then sneak out through the side door. He suggests they follow his lead and start investigating the support links in this madhouse. Bond and Fred follow Frax into the empty corridors through the crew's lift. He heads toward the very center of the ship in an otherwise empty corridor. Looking around to check he isn't observed, Frax enters a keycode in the security lock and enters the room. Bond stealthily catches the lock before it engages again and he slips inside with Fred. There they observe Frax checking over the largest computer ever made. Wall to wall computer panels blink and hum as rows of monitors record the action throughout the decks. Frax busies himself at the central console which seems to be stuttering over an image of the Doctor. Frax pulls out his toolkit and asks "Bessie" what the trouble is.
Irish awakens to the sound of his sister's urgent calling. He opens his eyes and sees her stuck in a metal cage on the counter. Harley urges Irish to get up and run, but he finds himself immobile. His limbs feel numb, his head is dizzy and he's grumpy as hell. Nurse Chapel returns to the room sweetness and light. She strokes Harley and gives her a few nibbles of cheese telling her not to be so anxious. After all it will be her turn soon. Then Nurse Chapel comes to Irish's side. He notices she is wearing latex gloves and is somewhat afraid to touch him. He growls at her and struggles when she adjusts a headband gizmo over his ears. She cooes and tells him to relax. The procedure won't take long. She switches on the scanner and energy hums through Irish. He glances at the Doctor lying in the next bed. Before his confused eyes, Irish sees the Doctor start to shimmer.
Irish is being brain-scanned; Fred has tracked Drax to a hidden computer; and the Doctor (Von Schmidt) has developed an interest in blue crystals. But who is the Doctor lying trapped in Sickbay.
