WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE: One year ago in normal space-time, the Universe endured the worst tragedy it ever forgot… in the supernova explosion of Odin's Eye the Doctor died.
BACKGROUND: Vega Prime, a mostly water planet, was once home to a luxurious resort (two towers connected by a multi-story recreation center) on the satellite planet of Trellorious Major in the distant alpha Sector of space. It is located at a crucial juncture between the known "civilized" worlds of the Galaxy and the as yet "untamed" worlds of the exploratory sectors. Most of the space traffic was comprised of space privateers and star miners who took government grants to conquer remote space.
The resort has fallen on hard times no longer attracting
the wealthy to its casinos. The glitzy attractions are in bad disrepair. The
once long and beautiful fishing pier is in ruins. The place looks like a
run-down flea-bitten hotel. Even the once beautiful crystal blue waters that
teamed with the intelligent Seaphant aquatic life are a dirty and dull gray.
The Doctor - [Tuna] - the wandering infamous timelord in his 10th regeneration.
Irish - [Rob] - green telepathic feline with a close connection to the TARDIS. On Earth, he pretends being a normal house cat and favored pet of the Doctor's so talks only telepathically to his friends, especially around strangers.
"Fred"
(Eos) - [David] - a member of the race of energy beings known as "The
People". After establishing a rapport with Irish, she risked her life
to save him and the Doctor. She has taken the human name of Winnifred
Stephanie O'Connell ("Fred" for short) for herself.
Director Dil Difries - Managing Director of Vega Prime, once a traders paradise resort on the edge of the civilized galaxy. Now he does all he can to keep things going while under a trade embargo.
Sally-Anne "Bubbles" M'Gee - formerly a waitress in the bustling resort casino, she's taken on the job of the Director's secretary. She's one of the few remaining staff at Vega Prime, mostly because she has nowhere else to go.
Drax - a Gallifreyan classmate of the Doctor's, he dropped out of the Academy before finishing his doctorate and chose to travel the universe as an intergalactic fix-it man. He's recently fallen on hard times and the wrong side of undisclosed persons.
The Doctor, Fred & Irish pilot the newly restored TARDIS through the Woods wormhole and back into regular time. The encounter a bit of resistance bursting through the time vortex, which the Doctor dismisses as cobwebs in the old girl.
In a once fancy now rundown office, timelord drop-out Drax tries to con Director Dil Dilfries into letting him do repair work on a new water recycling filter in exchange for the materials to fix his transport. The Director is reluctant, but when Drax says he’s acquired certain hard-to-find elements he agrees. Director warns the work is to be undocumented only. He won’t run interference for any… retros. The deal is made.
The TARDIS materializes on the nearest available planet… right in the middle of a large cement ditch. They exit to find themselves inside an empty pool covered with a thick layer of muck and algae. It looks abandoned, but also familiar to the Doctor and Irish. They climb out and find themselves on the top of a recreational deck between two very tall twin buildings overlooking a large ocean beach. They are on Vega Prime – the renowned interstellar resort of Trellorious Major. Quickly they realize something is wrong. The place is no longer filled with happy resorters. It looks like a ghost town. The condo windows are dirty, the beach is filled with debris, even the ocean looks soiled and uninviting.
The Director answers a call from the vidphone. It’s a liaison officer from the Central Authority responding to Vega’s latest requests. As per directive 5.297, the resupply order is denied. The Director argues they need more supplies. It’s been almost an entire orbital cycle since they had a shipment of essentials. They need tritanium crystals to power their replenishment systems, along with a fresh supply of the basic necessities. The liaison officer acknowledges other planets in the system are in similar straights. The bottomline is no interstellar traffic is allowed to cross this corner of the sector for another 3 spans. The curfew is still in effect, but the liaison agrees to put Vega at the top of the resupply list. That’s all he can do. The liaison cuts off the call leaving the Director a moment to be disgruntled.
While exploring the decay of the resort, Irish takes his companions off on the scent of food. He smells fish and cream. The Doctor and Fred try to keep up, eventually tracking Irish down a few escalators and staircases to an exterior machine shop near the beach. There Irish finds a half eaten sardine sandwich next to a big glass of milk and a box of tools. Drax pokes his head from under the water filter intent on wrestling his lunch away from the scavenger. The Doctor is delighted to see Drax and eagerly introduces his friends to the fellow timelord. The only trouble is Drax doesn’t recognize the Doctor.
The Doctor tries to remind him. “It’s me, the Doctor. Theta Sigma? We went to school together, on Gallifrey.” As soon as school on Gallifrey is mentioned, Drax turns pale and defensive. He tells the Doctor to bugger off. He’s not part of that anymore. He’s just trying to make a living and stay out of the business. The Doctor tries to calm his old friend down, but it doesn’t work.
Irish hears a funny noise from the sky. It makes his ears twitch. Fred spots a bird flitting out of the sunlight. The shape reveals itself to not be a bird though. It’s more like a triangular mirror rippling through the air right toward them. Drax and the Doctor know what it is. Both yell “Run!”
His secretary Sally-Anne “Bubbles” M’Gee (a former cocktail waitress last we saw her) enters, catching the last bit of the call. She gives him the daily resident report, but something is clearly on her mind. She questions if it’s wise to do business with the likes of men like that Drax. Probably not, the Director concurs, but desperate times call for desperate measures. They need fresh water or Vega won’t have many “residents” left. Sally asks, what if “they” find out? She lowers her voice, as if afraid she’s being watched, after all he is a retrograde. The Director shushes her, forbidding her to use that word. He assures her it will be all right. After all, they are on one of the furthest fingers of the mutter spiral. The authority won’t be too concerned with them. Yet.
To belie that assertion the resort’s external security system rings an alarm. There’s an atmospheric disturbance over the beach. Sally-Anne reports (with an I-told-you-so alarm) it is a temporal-spatial distortion. The Director gets up and takes off in that direction.
The renowned Doctor is unknown? Something is hunting timelords. Where will it lead? To join the group and get next week's script early, please use our web sign up page or e-mail AlxKeegan2@aol.com.
