BACKGROUND

From February 1861 to April 9, 1865 the very NOT united states of America tore itself apart. States invaded other states, attrition and scorched earth were the policies of the day. Neighbors killing neighbors, families fighting even killing each other. At the end over 1,148,000 soldiers were dead. Add the civilians destroyed by disease and famine and the hopelessly violated bodies and minds of the survivors and the horror is mind numbing. Financial devastation, assassination, vengeance where forgiveness belongs, promises of freedom forgotten or exploited. The grave wounds had barely started to scab over when pestilence strikes and an series of epidemics of yellow fever spring out throughout the country. Armed guards force away those fleeing the fever. Medical giants fight over the way to treat the ill as the bodies mount up. Many read their Bibles, and easily believed the four horsemen of the Apocalypse; War, Famine, Pestilence and Death, were loosed upon the world. In 1870, yellow fever struck New York's harbor fronts. The authorities did the only thing that the medical world agreed helped stop it's spread. Victims were quickly quarantined on the isolated Hart Island. The facilities already there from a Civil War interment camp were converted into wards. Volunteers went with those banished for merely being sick, to care for them however they could.

PREVIOUSLY

After the accidental opening of the TARDIS door before materialization was complete, the crew each found themselves alone at different times on the strange Hart Island of New York. Phineas prevented a nuclear accident that could have started WW III and destroyed the planet. The Doctor was able to resolve a spillover from a great and interminable galactic war. The Doctor saved those affected and unknown numbers of others that could have been lost. But the resolution was the extermination of a mighty race even though many considered them all evil, the Doctor knew at least one that wasn't, so the taste of victory was as a mouth full of ashes as he to stepped into a whirling blue cloud.

CAST

The 11th Doctor - [Cody] tall, 6 foot man in his late 50's with gray curls, a wizened face, and sparkling blue eyes. He closely resembles his 4th incarnation after being aged a bit by time and turmoil.

Phineas - (Duncan) - 45, a gray haired (used to be red) scientist who has never undergone regeneration. His blue eyes sees things many of his colleagues don't so he is considered paranoid. A view that isn't hurt by the fact that both his assistants are cousins of his and he can't stand visitors to his lab.

Ravena Shaw - [Jen] Virginian colonist, granddaughter of a local farmer now deceased. She is unmarried, a woman of 23 thus a spinster (by choice). She lives on her family farm with her sister-in-law and nephew. Her brother (who owns the farm) is off fighting in Washington's army. Like the women in her family, she practices the old traditions of home remedies and Irish white witchcraft.

Colonel Dr. Elias Thornton Hannigan - 66, a retired military surgeon, he is a short rotund man with an iron constitution. His balding head is fringed with snow white hair and sports a neatly trimmed beard. It was while serving in the Mexican War that he first had experience with the fever. For a man of his time he is quite opened minded. He was a strong supporter of emancipation.

Dr. Cleland J. T. Craddick - 40's,a surgeon, tall and with long dark hair, almost handsome features that were spoiled by a thin lipped twisted smile. Arrogant and petty, curing fever victims is more a mater of establishing his own name than in actually helping anyone else. Believed to have been a Confederate sympathizer.

Dr. R. L. Gordon - 25, fair skinned with flaming red hair and bright green eyes, one of the first women to become a doctor in the U.S. she has learned to use her initials instead of her name (Lenore to those close to her) if she is to be granted any position of respect. As a young teen she came to New York as a refugee from the privations of the war in the south.

Elijah and Volunteers from the African Baptist Society – A volunteer group from the African Baptist church founded in the 18th century, that performed many acts of charity after the civil war. Was highly desired to care for fever victims as many believed that those of African descent were immune to the disease.

Boy – patient rescued by Ravena and in Ward B.

EARLY BEGINNING

HOSPITAL CAMP GROUNDS, PRE-DAWN (Ravena, Colonel Hannity)

Ravena has the wards under control as dawn breaks. She hasn't slept but is roaming the grounds pondering what was revealed to her the following evening. She never returned to Virginia after the drowning. Ravena wonders what this “history” means, what became of the Doctor & Phineas, and where her future lies now. In the midst of her turmoil, Colonol Hannigan charges toward her demanding answers. He has been going over the ship manifest from the previous day and finds no records of her as patient or family. Accustomed to a well-oiled operation, Hannigan fumes questioning her wanting to know where she came from. Ravena is unsure how to answer. WARD B, PRE-DAWN (Doctors Gordon and Craddick)

Gordon awakes at the sound of a ruckus. The boy patient stirs, calling out for his “Mama”, only to be answered very gruffly by Dr. Craddick with the usual (suck it up boy) mentality. Gordon jumps in and calmly quiets the boy down. She looks around for Ravena. Craddick, annoyed by his colleagues presumptive behavior, warns her about taking too many liberties. She may think she is a contemporary woman, but Hannigan has a reputation to uphold. He doesn’t like his staff making personnel changes under his nose. Gordon ignores it all, asking for the location of Ravena. Craddick reveals Hannigan went to find her. He talked about putting her off the island. Gordon races outside to stop it.

LATE BEGINNING

HOSPITAL CAMP GROUNDS (Ravena, Hannigan, Gordon)

Ravena finds herself facing another Josiah in Hannigan. Wisely, she does not challenge him but merely says he wouldn't believe her and walks away. Hannigan bursts with anger. Gordon and Craddick join the fray, Gordon challenging Hannigan over Ravena. In the end, everone looks to Ravena to explain exactly how and why she came to Hart Island.

WARD A,B,C (Patients, boy patient, volunteers)

Left alone in the ward, the boy is half in and out of consciousness. He hears a familiar whisper on the wind beckoning him. He calls out for his “Mama” again. Something appears to him in the distance. Still feverish, he gets up to follow.

MIDDLE

CAMP GROUNDS (Doctors, Ravena)

Absence of answers, Hannigan determines Ravena may be a danger to the staff and patients. Without her origins, he can’t say she isn’t a carrier of the disease. He suggests she be confined in quarantine till they figure it out. Gordon protests. Ravena is forced to admit she was traveling with the Doctor when she was separated. With that, a freak gale whips up through the camp knocking the wind out of everyone. When they recover, Elijah calls out from the ward for help.

PATIENT WARDS (Elijah, patients)

As the doctors debate outside, the air changes within the wards. Patients are riled. The volunteers have a hard time calming them as more and more call out for loved ones, many who are dead. Patients are so certain they have seen their deceased, they violently fight their caretakers to follow. Elijah and his staff have a hard time keeping the patients in beds. He finally calls out for the doctors to help.

BEHIND A STORAGE AREA (Doctor, Phineas & TARDIS)

An eerie blue gale whirls in the midst of the camp. Behind the storage barn, the wind focuses in a burst of blue light. As the light dims, it leaves a puzzled Doctor and Phineas beside the familiar blue box. Phineas and the Doctor are reunited, sharing a bit of where they came from and more curiosity how they came to be separated. The Doctor sees the TARDIS, inspects it and finds the door cracked open. He poses a theory and cheerily suggests they go looking for Ravena.

EARLY ENDING WARDS (ALL)

The doctors rush into the ward just as the gale settles down again. Hannigan fumes over Elijah’s report and the state of the patients. Hannigan suggests all this air has only made the patients delirious and suggests Ravena’s doctor friend is little more than a charleton or a figment. Just then the Doctor enters the ward, asking if he was being talked abut. Ravena is happy to see her friends again. Especially when the Doctor defends Ravena’s medical skill to the pompous Hannigan. But their happy reunion is soon ended when Gordon blurts out something she’s noticed: the boy patient is gone.

Turns out the boy was very concerned for his mother. But according to the morgue reports, she died during yesterday’s ship journey. Feeling strangely close to the child, Ravena is compelled to drop everything and look for him.

ENDING

ISLAND EXTERIOR (All)

Hannigan directs search parties. The Doctor and Phineas offer some technological help in tracing the boy’s life signs. But Ravena’s instincts win the day. She follows the boy’s tracks to the cliffs overlooking the harbor, the same ones she materialized beside the day before. The boy is walking, in a trance, toward the edge reaching out for his dead mother. It’s as if he sees her. Ravena catches him before he inadvertently plunges to his death.

LATE ENDING

HOSPITAL CAMP (All, but mainly Ravena, Doctor, Phineas)

After the boy is settled into his bed, it seems the other patients are beginning to show signs of recovery. Hannigan is nonplussed at the news, while Craddick is ruefully impressed, and Gordon beams with pride. Meanwhile Ravena watches the boy sleep. Phineas wonders aloud why they all ended up in this different places and yet came back here. He can understand the NIKE incident, and the Rutans too, but why a 19th century epidemic? The Doctor does not explain but suggests that at the very least history had just the right nursemaids when it needed them. He suggests it is time to go. Surprisingly, Ravena refuses. She smiles, admits she’s not sure why this strange journey occurred in her life, but she now knows it’s time for the journey to end. She’s staying behind in this place and time. Phineas protests, it’s not her time. To his surprise, the Doctor shares a smile with Ravena and agrees. He also offers her a gentleman’s kiss to the back of her hand and gratitude for tending “this old cranky patient”.

The Doctor slips away with a somewhat argumentative and puzzled Phineas following. In the distance, a wheeze and groan is heard.
