September, 1781 on the opening of the Chesapeake Bay, Southern Virginia. The American Continental Army (led by General George Washington) and their French Allies (led by General Rochambeau and Naval Commander Comte de Grasse) surrounded the British forces (led by Lord Cornwallis) in the small sea village of Yorktown. The seige lasted 3 weeks while Cornwallis awaited support from British Commander Henry Clinton (whose fleet based in New York expecting to battle the rebels there). If Clinton got word soon enough, he had a large enough fleet to route the French and Rebels. But alas he received word too late. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781 as the British played "The World Turned Upside Down".
This story is placed on the southern peninsula of Virginia near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay between the York and James Rivers on a waterway called Hampton Roads.

The 11th Doctor - [Cody] tall, 6 foot man in his late 50's with gray curls, a wizened face, and sparkling blue eyes. He closely resembles his 4th
incarnation after being aged a bit by time and turmoil.

Ravena Shaw - [Jen] Virginian colonist, granddaughter of a local farmer now deceased. She is unmarried, a woman of 23 thus a spinster (by choice). She
lives on her family farm with her sister-in-law and nephew. Her brother (who owns the farm) is off fighting in Washington's army. Like the women in her
family, she practices the old traditions of home remedies and Irish white witchcraft.
Major Patrick Jefferson - aid to Washington, CO sent to track down escaping Tory spy before he can get reinforcements for Cornwallis.
Magistrate Josiah Henry - local leader, a zealot reverend with Tory leanings.
Adams - soldiers under Jefferson's command
Robertson - soldier under Jefferson's command
Biggs - runs the docks at Hampton, also a brawny henchman who works for Henry as guard and local militiaman.
Keefe - muscled by dumber henchmen working for Henry. He works with Biggs transporting the local crops to market towns.
A campfire burns in a clearing. Ravena sits on the ground staring at her
necklace in the firelight. She recites a rhyme learned in childhood about the stars. Suddenly a cacophony of sound feels the air. Wild winds whip around
blowing sparks out of the campfire in a whirl of smoke and starlight. Ravena backs away frightened as a dark cloud consumes the firelight. The cloud casts
the shadow of a figure, then disperses to reveal a tall gray-haired old man. The man falls to the ground unconscious.
Major Jefferson arrives on the shore and addresses his advance scouts Adams and Robertson. Adams reports all their supplies have made it safely across. Robertson brings a local representative to help in their task - Reverend Josiah Henry. Josiah, however, is not happy about being called away to this meeting and tells the Major so. He was involved in a very important event at the Meeting House as his fellows were hunting down a villain that had plagued their town for far too long. Major Jefferson has more important things to pursue - namely a stranger with English leanings who is believed to be heading this way. The fate of their nation depends on finding the man. A loud cacophony is heard in the dense woods to the west. Rev. Henry curses his detainment recognizing that sound. He races off in its direction. Major Jefferson and Robertson follow hoping it may be there man.
Ravena is at first frightened of the mysterious stranger, but when he moans in obvious distress her compassionate instincts take over. She approaches the man, using one of the campfire embers to light the way. His clothes are torn, his skin scratched and his face deathly pale. When she gets close enough to survey his breathing, he snatches her arm and pulls her close. He calls her a strange name and asks for help. Just then she hears footsteps rapidly approaching in the forest. Ravena half-carries, half-drags the stranger through the clearing and toward the nearest farm.
Biggs and Keefe blunder loudly through the woods carrying lanterns and
rifles. They think they are quietly carrying out the search, of course. Keefe questions whether they should have waited longer for Rev. Henry. Biggs is
adamant about pursuing the devil before he knows. That's all the more reason for Keefe to wait for the good reverend. It's a full moon and according to
the tales of these woods the devil is said to dance with his handmaidens. Biggs points out the sparkling show of lights in the clearing ahead, and
charges toward it. He eggs Keefe on to capture the devil's agents before they scatter.
Ravena gets the stranger into her barn as Briggs & Keefe track them to the clearing. The old man babbles nonsense, naming foes she's never heard of (i.e. Silurians, Yeti, Daleks, etc.) and instructing her to do things that make little sense (i.e. use the sonic screwdriver, reverse the neutron flow, cut off the helmic regulator). He is violent in his need to run from the villains, even fighting Ravena's help. But she manages to calm him down enough to hide him in the hay. Just then the farm is flooded with the sounds of horses and men. Ravena fears the men but her attempts to hide seemingly fail as they draw ever closer to the barn doors.
Biggs leads Keefe on a wild chase through the woods into the clearing then out again on the trail of some tracks. When he gets to the woods edge, Biggs sees what he thinks are devilish figures (half human half horse) and fires his rifle.
Meanwhile Rev Josiah Henry follows the cacophony of sound directly to the road by the Shaw farm. But before he can get into the nearby woods, he turns and finds Major Jefferson & Private Robertson behind him. Josiah stops to send them away just as a shot rings out from the woods. Robertson falls from his horse clutching his arm. Jefferson draws his weapon to defend against the enemy from the woods.
Biggs and Keefe charge out of the woods to inspect their kill and find
themselves up against Major Jefferson's pistol. Keefe recognizes the major's uniform as a revolutionary, but Biggs is too consumed with his hunt to care.
Biggs declares to Rev Josiah that they followed the harridan this time and he nearly had her in his sights with the devil himself!
Autumn 1781 brings the twilight of the American Revolution. Locals hunt witches and devils in the haunted woods. Continental soldiers hunt British spies. And a mysterious stranger who appeared out of nowhere must navigate himself out of a historical conundrum.
