BACKGROUND

September, 1781 on the opening of the Chesapeake Bay, Southern Virginia. The American Continental Army (led by General George Washington) and their French Allies (led by General Rochambeau and Naval Commander Comte de Grasse) surrounded the British forces (led by Lord Cornwallis) in the small sea village of Yorktown. The seige lasted 3 weeks while Cornwallis awaited support from British Commander Henry Clinton (whose fleet based in New York expecting to battle the rebels there). If Clinton got word soon enough, he had a large enough fleet to route the French and Rebels. But alas he received word too late. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781 as the British played "The World Turned Upside Down".

This story is placed on the southern peninsula of Virginia near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay between the York and James Rivers on a waterway called Hampton Roads.

THE CAST
Reserved roles marked by a [name]

The 11th Doctor - [Cody] tall, 6 foot man in his late 50's with gray curls, a wizened face, and sparkling blue eyes. He closely resembles his 4th incarnation after being aged a bit by time and turmoil.

Ravena Shaw - [Jen] Virginian colonist, granddaughter of a local farmer now deceased. She is unmarried, a woman of 23 thus a spinster (by choice). She lives on her family farm with her sister-in-law and nephew. Her brother (who owns the farm) is off fighting in Washington's army. Like the women in her family, she practices the old traditions of home remedies and Irish white witchcraft.

Major Patrick Jefferson - aid to Washington, CO sent to track down escaping Tory spy before he can get reinforcements for Cornwallis.

Magistrate Josiah Henry - local leader, a zealot reverend with Tory leanings.

Adams - soldiers under Jefferson's command

Robertson - soldier under Jefferson's command

Biggs - runs the docks at Hampton, also a brawny henchman who works for Henry as guard and local militiaman.

Keefe - muscled by dumber henchmen working for Henry. He works with Biggs transporting the local crops to market towns.

Pleasance Shaw - age 20, Ravena's sister-in-law. Her husband (James) is serving in Washington's army believed to be north in New York Colony. She has a newborn son (James Jr.) about 6 months old. She has no other family and thus fears losing her home. If her husband does not return or the local magistrate can find some reason to accuse her husband's family of wrongdoing she fears she may lose their lands and home. Her sister-in-law's strange antics are a source of dismay for Pleasance.

Widow Penworthy - Pleasance and Ravena's aunt, widowed 10 years. Her husband was a South Carolina landowner. She had no children, married late in life, and has returned to her father's Virginia farm with the remnants of her husband's fortune - a good inheritance and one slave (who she has freed and pays wages to).

Strom - A former slave who worked for Widow Penworthy's husband. He followed the widow to Virginia. Now freed, he chooses to stay with her out of loyalty and friendship. Unfortunately, the local whites, namely Reverend Josiah, still treat him as a lowly slave. He does mostly handiwork keeping the farmhouse in order. He's big, strong and silent with haunting eyes that have seen more than most ever would.

EARLY BEGINNING / CLIFFHANGER END

SHAW FARMHOUSE (Maj Jefferson, Robertson, Josiah Henry, Keefe, Biggs, Widow Penworthy, Pleasance Shaw, Strom)

Pleasance charges out of the farmhouse with Widow Penworthy and Strom to investigate the ruckus in the yard. Major Jefferson introduces himself and begs the ladies' pardon, they have come seeking a dangerous stranger that may be lurking about. Rev Henry turns the search into an accusation and demands to know where the Shaw "healer" is. Pleasance corrects him saying her sister is abed and she doesn't appreciate his tone. Mrs. Penworthy notes Robertson's bleeding wound needs attention and suggests the soldiers accompany them inside the house to see to it. She makes a point of not inviting Josiah, Biggs or Keefe to join them. Jefferson and the ladies help Robertson inside while Strom watches Josiah's crew skulk off (them saying a few slurs at him as they go).

SHAW BARN (Ravena, the Doctor)

Ravena listens closely to the conversation outside while the Doctor falls asleep. Ravena notes the mention of a dangerous stranger and studies the half-conscious stranger asleep in her hay. She does not believe he is dangerous and is compelled to help him.

BEGINNING

SHAW FARMHOUSE (Pleasance, Robertson, Maj Jefferson, Widow Penworthy)

Pleasance tends to Robertson's arm, cleaning and dressing the flesh wound. Major Jefferson takes the opportunity to question the ladies, mostly addressing his questions to Widow Penworthy. She tells him the only male member of the household, Pleasance's husband and her nephew, is off fighting under Washington's command. They've not had word in months but believed he was near New York. Nor have they heard any disturbance of strangers except for the fray Josiah Henry caused. Jefferson offers to leave some soldiers there as a protection against their enemy, but Pleasance refuses hastily. Widow Penworthy appeases the soldiers assuring them Strom provides more than enough protection for them. Jefferson and Robertson take their leave.

SHAW BARN (Ravena, the Doctor)

Ravena gets fresh water, her collection of herbs, and bandages the stranger wounds. Mollified by her care he finally calms down enough to give her his name or rather title (Doctor). She's careful to avoid the attention of the soldiers or her family. She stays in the barn through the night beside the stranger. He speaks gibberish mostly and keeps talking about his TARDIS (who she mistakes for a companion or his boat). He keeps saying he must find the old girl.

MIDDLE

MEETING HOUSE (Josiah, Biggs, Keefe)

Josiah Henry along with Biggs & Keefe arrive back at their Meeting House. Josiah is furious with the old hag Widow Penworthy. Keefe reminds him they can do nothing to question her as she has high friends in Williamsburg. That only angers Josiah more. But Biggs questions what the soldiers are after. Josiah dismisses it as some nonsense to do with this interminable rebellion. They are seeking a loyalist to the Crown. All three men laugh over that. It's clear Biggs and Henry are not the most supportive of the rebellion. Josiah asks Biggs what they found in the woods - was she there? Keefe reports seeing a strange light in the woods: the ghost light. Biggs says there was also a man, he's sure of it. They were just ahead of them out of the woods. Henry suspects Ravena Shaw is hiding her demon lover then. And he comes up with a perfect way to catch them both and remove this curse from them.

SHAW BARN (Pleasance, Widow Penworthy, Ravena, Strom... sleeping Doctor)

Pleasance and Widow Penworthy surprise Ravena in the barn. Fortunately the Doctor has fallen fast asleep and is quickly hidden under a blanket. Ravena feigns innocence at her presence there, but Pleasance is furious. She accuses her sister of going off to do it again, but this time Josiah Henry almost caught her in the act. Ravena insists there's nothing wrong with a midnight stroll. But there is danger in communing with spirits, Pleasance argues. She reminds Ravena of the precarious place they find themselves: her husband Heaven Knows Where in war, no other male to protect them (Strom may take slight offense at that), and Josiah Henry eagerly waiting for any reason to claim their land. Widow Penworthy quiets the two down reminding them little harm has been done. And they best get some sleep before the sun rises on another day. Reluctantly Ravena leaves the barn, an eye cast to the sleeping stranger, and returns to the house for the night.

SOLDIERS' ENCAMPMENT (Maj Jefferson, Adams, Robertson)

Jefferson sees Robertson back to the encampment where Adams reports all supplies have landed and they are coordinating off the main escape routes. Adams notes Robertsons' wounds and asks if the villain has been encountered. Robertson says it was just overanxious locals, but Major Jefferson has his own suspicions. He notes his observation that the Shaw Farm is hardly a league from the river. And the Shaw ladies seemed a bit too anxious, as if they were hiding something or merely afraid. Robertson can't believe those nice ladies would be traitors. Jefferson orders his soldier to rest for the night. And in the morning, he tells Adams, they have a hunch to follow.

ENDING

SHAW FARM (Ravena, the Doctor)

The next day the Shaw's go about their normal business, but Ravena takes over all the barn duties. When she is milking the cow, the Doctor finally stirs. He is more coherent than the night before. He also finds himself in a strange place wearing not much more than an old horse blanket. Ravena is pleased to see him sober, points out the clothes she left for him (old Sunday best belonging to her Grandfather) and offers to fetch him some food. For once the Doctor remembers her name, but turns down her offer. He insists he must be going. To his TARDIS, she asks? The Doctor tries to keep that secret. Ravena says she saw nothing in the woods besides his appearance in the mist. The idea that he could be stranded in a primitive land without his TARDIS upsets the Doctor to near hysterics. He once again becomes unstable. Ravena tries to calm him down yet fails. The Doctor misinterprets her attempts as a villainous attempt to hold him captive. He pushes her out of the way and makes for freedom… right into the hands of Major Jefferson.

WOODS BEHIND THE FARM (Maj Jefferson, Adams, and later the Doctor)

Major Jefferson along with Adams and a contingent of soldiers search the woods by daylight. They find no tracks from the water, but Jefferson stops in the clearing. He studies the remains of the campfire finding them very interesting. He surmises it was a signal fire of some sort, perhaps a beacon to the enemy. But curiously all the branches have been pulverized and two scorch marks resembling feet are in the middle of the flames. The scorch prints lead off into the woods, beginning a trail back to the Shaw Farm. Jefferson's men follow the tracks, right up to the barn where they hear a ruckus inside.

Just then the Doctor bursts out swearing with the obvious accent of an aristocrat. Jefferson orders the man arrested.

Next time...

A brand new universe begins. Revolution, war, strife, witches, strange devil's campfires and a confused stranger who barely knows his own name. To join the group and get next week's script by e-mail, please use our web sign up page or e-mail AlxKeegan2@aol.com.
