BACKGROUND

September, 1781 on the opening of the Chesapeake Bay, Southern Virginia. The American Continental Army (led by General George Washington) and their French Allies (led by General Rochambeau and Naval Commander Comte de Grasse) surrounded the British forces (led by Lord Cornwallis) in the small sea village of Yorktown. The seige lasted 3 weeks while Cornwallis awaited support from British Commander Henry Clinton (whose fleet based in New York expecting to battle the rebels there). If Clinton got word soon enough, he had a large enough fleet to route the French and Rebels. But alas he received word too late. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781 as the British played "The World Turned Upside Down".

This story is placed on the southern peninsula of Virginia near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay between the York and James Rivers on a waterway called Hampton Roads.

CAST

The 11th Doctor - [Cody] tall, 6 foot man in his late 50's with gray curls, a wizened face, and sparkling blue eyes. He closely resembles his 4th incarnation after being aged a bit by time and turmoil.

Ravena Shaw - [Jen] Virginian colonist, granddaughter of a local farmer now deceased. She is unmarried, a woman of 23 thus a spinster (by choice). She lives on her family farm with her sister-in-law and nephew. Her brother (who owns the farm) is off fighting in Washington's army. Like the women in her family, she practices the old traditions of home remedies and Irish white witchcraft.

Major Patrick Jefferson - aid to Washington, CO sent to track down escaping Tory spy before he can get reinforcements for Cornwallis.

Magistrate Josiah Henry - local leader, a zealot reverend with Tory leanings.

Adams - soldiers under Jefferson's command

Robertson - soldier under Jefferson's command

Biggs - runs the docks at Hampton, also a brawny henchman who works for Henry as guard and local militiaman.

Keefe - muscled by dumber henchmen working for Henry. He works with Biggs transporting the local crops to market towns.

Pleasance Shaw - Ravena's sister-in-law.

Widow Penworthy - Pleasance and Ravena's aunt.

BEGINNING

SHAW FARM (Jefferson, Adams, the Doctor, Ravena, Pleasance, Widow Penworthy)

Ravena chases after the Doctor out of the barn while Pleasance and Widow Penworthy follow the sounds of a ruckus out of their house. The Doctor protests his arrest as Adams binds his hands to his horse. Widow Penworthy asks Maj Jefferson what is going on here again. Jefferson reveals his uncovery of the British spy he was looking for with some veiled inclination that the man was hiding in their barn. Pleasance panics and insists they had nothing to do with the man. Ravena blurts out that the Doctor is not a spy, but is silenced by her family before she can incriminate herself more. Jefferson declares he'll have to discover that for himself. Adams and Jefferson head back to their base camp, leading/dragging the Doctor behind (he's tied to Adams horse with a rope).

WOODS NEARBY (Rev Josiah Henry, Biggs & Keefe)

Having setup a lookout point over the Shaw Farm, they watch the ruckus at the Shaw Farm with great interest. But when the soldiers leave, Josiah and his cronies stay.

MIDDLE

BASE CAMP (Jefferson, Adams, Robertson, the Doctor)

Jefferson and Adams return to their base camp with the Doctor in tow. All the soldiers are dirty, tired, hungry and take a can interest in the clean and polished stranger. The Doctor curbs his irritation and tries politeness to win his freedom. His manners only convince his captors of his gult. Jefferson interrogates the Doctor inside his command tent. The Doctor incriminates himself with detailed knowledge of the American Rebels plans (he knows Washington is in Baltimore not New York; he knows Cornwallis is surrounded in York Town; he knows of the recent French Naval victory nearby and he knows there is a fleet large enough to defeat the rebels if they would only leave New York). But the Doctor also redeems himself by calling the rebels "Americans", complimenting their resilence and determination, and espousing other sympathies to the American side. Jefferson is still unsure, questioning what the Doctor was doing there.

SHAW FARM (Ravena, Pleasance and Widow Penworthy)

As soon as the soldiers leave, Ravena makes to follow and protest. Pleasance stops her, furious at her sister-in-law. The two argue. Pleasance demands to know what Ravena was doing with that man. Ravena admits she found him, but he's not a spy. He was wounded in the woods. Pleasance is appalled her sister would bring a stranger back to their farm, especially one she found in the middle of the night while on other of her spirit quests. After all there's no knowing what he is or wants. Ravena protests the idea the man is a spy or some demon of her imagining. She sees good in his soul, troubled but good. They hear a noise in the woods nearby and Widow Penworthy hushes both women. She reminds them they shouldn't be having this conversation out in the open. All three look around at the woods, as if hunting spies, but see nothing and retreat to their house.

WOODS (Josiah, Biggs and Keefe)

Watch the Shaw women argue and take keen interest in their conversation. At the mention of "demons", Josiah blurts out an exclamation a bit too loudly. It attracts the women's attention. Josiah silences his fellows and waits for the women to depart.

ENDING

BASE CAMP (Jefferson, Adams, the Doctor)

The Doctor has no easy answers for Jefferson about how he came to be here. His memory is fuzzy but he remembers a great battle. Adams suggests he came from the skirmishes in Williamsburg of Yorktown. The Doctor remembers the city, but knows it was gone. Then his memory jumbles. He flashes back to the sounds of many battles. He describes them as jumble: the French attacking with bows and arrows (Agincourt), the Thals being surrounded by Daleks, Cybermen crushing their enemies, etc. The more he talks the more Jefferson begins to think the stranger is deranged. The Doctor may even play up his craziness. Finally Jefferson and Adams confer and conclude the stranger is probably a civilian caught up in the battle at Yorktown and suffering from the craziness that follows.

WOODS (Ravena, being followed by Josiah, Biggs and Keefe)

Later, Ravena slips away from her family and heads off into the woods. She hopes to find the Doctor's companions or his ship TARDIS and prove he is not a spy. So intent is she on her mission, she fails to notice she's being followed. Ravena searches the riverfront finding neither footprints nor a boat. She continues inland back to the clearing. There she spots many footsteps looking all around. She begins to despair ever finding anything. Then something glints in the sunlight and catches her eye. Ravena follows the attraction to the smoldering ashes of her previous campfire. She brushes the ashes around and finds a man's ring. It is a dull silver, possible pewter, with a dark sapphire jewel and an odd circular crest on the stone surface. Ravena picks up the ring, feeling odd sensations from it. As she holds it in her palm, the stone changes color. Then the ring shines in the sunlight and a blast of light surrounds her. She sees a faint blue box appear before her. At that moment, Josiah cries out from the woods ordering his men to capture her. Biggs and Keefe grab Ravena, wrestling her to the ground. The ring drops off in the confusion. Josiah proclaims at last Ravena shows her true witch colors and she will face retribution.

Next time...

Autumn 1781 brings the twilight of the American Revolution. Locals hunt witches and devils in the haunted woods. Continental soldiers hunt British spies. And a mysterious stranger who appeared out of nowhere must navigate himself out of a historical conundrum.
